About the project:
Eleven municipalities in southern Luxembourg, represented by the PRO-SUD municipal association, have submitted their application for the UNESCO “Man and the Biosphere” label at the initiative of the Luxembourg National Commission for UNESCO. Launched in 1971, the MAB program aims to establish the scientific foundations for improving the relationship between humans and the environment and to promote innovative and sustainable development approaches. There are currently 701 biosphere reserves in 124 countries worldwide. An important part of the application was the involvement of the local population in the process.
Services provided:
Snakke & Co’s support included the design, organization, and implementation of the entire participatory process, as well as the application of the results for the MAB region.
• Design and coordination of the citizen participation process
• Organization and facilitation of 11 workshops in the municipalities with a total of over 600 participants
• Collection, summarization, and analysis of 104 project proposals in the areas of business, tourism, energy, education, culture, the sharing economy, agriculture, food, and identity
• Preparation of a summary report and contribution to the application documents for UNESCO recognition
• Organization and facilitation of 11 workshops in the municipalities with a total of over 600 participants
• Collection, summarization, and analysis of 104 project proposals in the areas of business, tourism, energy, education, culture, the sharing economy, agriculture, food, and identity
• Preparation of a summary report and contribution to the application documents for UNESCO recognition
Results and Added Values:
Since October 28, 2020, the Minette region has been a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve. Luxembourg is thus participating in the MAB program, which aims to promote biodiversity and sustainable development through citizen engagement, education, and research.
